Engagement sessions are such a great way to get to know your photographer! It’s one of the most important things to me, to have this time to get to know my couples more. I love to discuss outfits with my bride, get to know the groom more and give them amazing portraits they normally don’t get in a fun environment.
You’ve got an idea of your outfit, you know what date, but what location?!
Richmond is an incredible city because it’s so diverse! There are so many amazing locations for engagement sessions that sometimes it just gets so overwhelming! There’s gorgeous nature locations, urban scenes and even both together! Richmond is right on the James River so when you add nature AND city, you can get magic. Not sure where to even begin for brainstorming locations? Don’t worry, I got you!
Here’s 5 of my favorite locations for an amazing Richmond engagement session!
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of my favorite places to visit in Richmond and so, it’s one of my favorite places to photograph too! It’s got a beautiful classic vibe from their foyer to their Pink Marble Hall, fun and whimsical Chihuly red reeds outdoors and their sculpture garden. I LOVE the VMFA and it’s always a great time walking through the museum with my couples enjoying the day and admiring the art.

Libby Hill Park
Do you love the hustle and bustle of city life while your fiance prefers a nature feel? Then this is the perfect location for you both! Libby Hill is a small but gorgeous park overlooking Richmond. I love it here because you can get so much variety in your portraits. Sitting together in the grass having a picnic or walking along on the cobblestone sidewalk with the city in the background. It’s a great blend of city and nature!
Maymont Park
A classic Richmond location, Maymont Park is a sprawling park with rolling hills and two incredibly gorgeous gardens that look amazing especially in the spring and fall. The Italian Garden bursts with blooms spring through fall while the Japanese Garden has a waterfall, bridges & plenty of different viewpoints across the pond.
Belle Isle and Brown’s Island
This is one of my favorite places in Richmond, ever. I love spending summer days at Belle Isle, going on walks on the trails, rock hopping on the river and enjoying the city view on the walking bridge over the James River. I always recommend Belle Isle for my nature loving couples because you really can’t beat the beautiful river view with the Richmond city skyline in the back!
Virginia State Capitol
Another gorgeous location for the bride who’s wanting a more classic look for their portraits! You really cannot go wrong at the Virginia State Capitol building. It has gorgeous brick sidewalks and the building itself, ugh so stunning! There’s a lovely water fountain in the area and in the spring, flowers bloom adding a bright pop of color to the classic building in the background.
